I really wrestled with buying a gas operated splitter but couldn't justify the $1000, so I bought the greyhound 10 ton manual splitter on Dec 2011. I split about a half of a cord of 6-8 inch dia. maple and oak in 5 hours, if I tried to split the same amount with my splitting maul, my back would've given out in 2 hrs.
The owners manual didn't say that the right piston lever moves slower than the left one.
I pump both of them until the left one starts to bog, then use the slower right one until the log starts to split, then I use the left one for a faster finish stroke.
I use a 4"x6" wooden block for shorter logs, just be sure it clears the first set of log cradles,10 tons will bend it forward, ask me how I know!
I set my splitter up on (2) 8" cinder blocks and a piece of plywood to keep from bending down so low.
I would highly recommend this splitter, great deal for the price.

Works as intended, no problems. A lot easier than using an axe. Saves my back too.
I installed bigger wheels to make it easier to move.

Used for 30 days and developed a small leak from one of the compression rods. Took it back and they exchanged it, no questions.

Very useful product and easily splits logs.

I don't split tons of wood so I wanted something without the bells and whistles of the electric ones...More to break...

Comments about Greyhound 10 Ton Hydraulic Log Splitter:

After a trip to the ER and two surgeries in November I decided that swinging a maul to split with anymore was not a great idea. Not wanting to invest in a hydraulic splitter I saw this and decided to give it a try. Splits 10" Oak with ease. I like also like another review use a 4"x6" wooden block for shorter logs and agree that just be sure it clears the first set of log cradles,10 tons will bend it forward. Great price and with the 20% discount even better.

This is actually a great product, the best way to use it is to split the wood in half and then use the axe to split the rest.

A friend gave me a cut up Ash tree in the spring. I stacked the logs, some almost 20 inches in diameter in the driveway. I looked at them every day wondering how I was going split those big ones. Then I got this on a great sale. I thought it might at least help. Wow, it pops those big chunks right apart. Easy to store and I can even bring it into my shop (where my wood stove is) and split there in the winter.

I had avoided purchasing a powered unit for years, but was gettin concerned about swinging an axe or maul at my age. Picked it up at Harbor Freight and with two hours after I got it home, had lots of split wood. Split two logs which were 10" or more with ease. When not in use, it stands on end and takes up less than a square foot of space. Wish I had purchase one years ago.
