Product Support

These Frequently Asked Questions are a supplement to the Owner's Manual and Safety Instructions. Please review the Owner's Manual for safety warnings and precautions, and assembly, operating, inspection, maintenance, and cleaning procedures.
Harbor Freight Tools has several models for different applications, from carving wood to cutting metal. Answering the following questions should help you decide on the best tool for the job.
  • How often will the tool be used? If the tool will be used daily, then you should consider a more powerful rotary tool.
  • What will the tool be used for? If your application will mostly involve precision work like carving and engraving, then consider a tool with a flexible shaft and a handpiece. The handpiece offers more control when detailing. If your application will mostly involve cutting metal like bolts, all-thread rod, or thin metal sheet, then consider a more powerful tool with speed control.
There are many types of bits supplied with the tools. Refer to the manual and the included bit/material/speed chart.
  • High-speed cutting bits: intended for cutting and carving wood, plastic, and soft metal
  • Tungsten carbide cutters: intended for engraving hard materials
  • Grinding stones, Aluminum oxide (red or orange): intended for general purpose grinding and sharpening
  • Grinding stones, Silicon carbide (blue or green): intended for griding hard materials like glass and fired ceramic
  • Diamond coated bits: intended for carving and engraving wood as well as hard materials like ceramic, stone, and glass
  • Wire brushes: intended for conditioning metals like rust removal
  • Nylon brushes: intended for detail cleaning
  • Polishing wheels and bobs: intended to be used with polishing compounds to polish metals and plastics
  • Sanding bands: intended for detail sanding of wood, metal and plastics
  • Cutting discs: intended for cutting off metal or plastic materials
When using the tool, make sure that the vents are not covered because covering the vents will impede airflow and cause the housing to build up heat. Also, if the tool is used continuously, it may start to feel warm. To lower the tool temperature, turn off the tool and let it cool or run the tool without load and without a bit for about a minute to circulate air through the motor. When working on a workpiece, always let the tool do the work instead of pushing hard on the material, which can stress the tool.
Let the tool do the work. Adding pressure and pressing hard on the workpiece is not necessary and may decrease the speed of the bit. If the tool stops, either decrease the force being applied until the bit spins faster or turn it back on and apply less force to the workpiece. If reducing the pressure on the tool does not work, the tool may not have enough power for your application. Please make sure you use the proper tool based on the needs of your application.
