I've experienced none of the problems reported by other reviews. The tools are durable and have performed well for me. My only complaint is that they were ground a bit rough, and benefit from some light sharpening before first use.

I use these for pens, bowls, boxes, and tool handles. So far, I have made nearly 100 projects with my original set without incident. I have dropped them, stepped on them, and used them too aggressively many times. Every few projects, I give them a few strokes across some fine sandpaper on a flat surface. That's enough to keep them sharp and cutting fine.

I use these to lathe wooden lures for bass. I have had no real problem with them. They cut fine and are easy to handle. don't be afraid of the cheap price. They are not top of the line but, They will work for most of your small projects. As long as you keep the correct angle on them while cutting, they will work fine. But, like any lathe tool if you get too much of a bite they will hang up and kick back. I would recommend these to any one who is a beginner or advanced. I would use a better tool for a bigger job. You can buy a face shield at harbor freight for less than $15. That should be the first tool you buy for your lathe. $15 is a very cheap insurance policy for your eyes and teeth.

This is a good set for the beginning turner. I use my lathe to make tap handles for my home-brewed beers (and toy tops, etc -little stuff). They are inexpensive, and will give you an idea regarding what to look for in your future tools -the ONLY issue I have with them is that as they are not high-speed steel, they don't hold an edge very long, so you will get real familiar with proper grinding angles (grin). However, rather than blow a lot of bread on expensive tools you may or may not like, this will let the beginner get a feel for which ones work best for them. They are cheap enough that you won't mind modifying them to make more specialized tools for your personal preference/needs. I've used mine for about a year, and will be getting a higher-quality set soon, and modifying some of these to make more specialized tools. Some have had issues with the steel separating from the handle -this has NOT been my experience.

This turning set is ok to get you started with your new lathe, but sooner or later you will want a set that is made from high speed steel. Yes, they will cost more, but they will stay sharp longer. These won't hold an edge and the vibration will make the chisel pull out from the wood handle.

Good to have around for special grinds and when you want to get a real sharp tool that won't see a lot of use. Obviously not the best for a primary set, however I actually use the skew as much as any other as it's nice and thin and can get super sharp with the slightly lower grade steel. Can't beat the price.

These tools are either not the tool steel the paragraph advertises or their heat treatment is horrible. I measured mine and got around 20 - 25 HRC. Tool steel should be close to 60 HRC. In the world of hardness, this is like comparing softened butter to the knife you spread it with. However, I'm currently using them and I will keep using them until I can purchase better ones.

ye gods...right out of the box some of the gouges had burnt edges.everything else was just plain dull.I did manage to grind them up for use.However,I would not reccomend this for a beginners set.
