Use this for small holes ,for a stirling engine build and work good, it's well balanced
And very compact might have to build a travel box to instal it in and be very easy to tote around if need to. The thing that I liked was the light , but the bulb burnt out of it and was yellow to my taste went and bought an LED bulb and it is very bright and well lit by it , some could try if your not into liking the reg. Bulb the switches are very good and base out of heavy steal stamping , I must say that the instructions do not say anything about the chuck part but it can be installed using a 2 x 4 and rubber malet ,speed of machine are prety good I was surprised of the power on this little press not so on heavy steal unless you run it on low and use a lube to cut , if used on high it will eat up your drill bits and hole saw very fast coused by heat . Other thing it the grips are tapered and ergonomic to the hand . Love this little toy and will be used for a lot of projects ,,,, And would recommend this to a friend but if your one to be an OCD machinist I'd recommend to get a bigger one . I'll give it 5 stars. From me and all DIY 'rs out there keep up the good work harbour fright.

Completely satisfied. My first one was item 38119 purchased in 2000. After Katrina I noticed the motor would hum and not run. Had run/start capacitor
checked out and it had gone out. New one would have cost me $45.00 so got new drill press.

Great general utility drill press. When you need a hole in something, this will put one there and it's pretty solidly built.

Another review mentioned the spindle having a few hundreths play... Look. This is an inexpensive benchtop drillpress. It's not for machinists, obsessive compulsives or people who have a bizarre relationship with their tools. It's for people who need to drill a hole in this, put a hole in that. What little tollerence disparity it might have isn't going to mean a hill of beans for 99.9% of tasks and for those people who bought it expecting it to achieve the 0.1%, well, your expectations were too high.

I bought this press drill in 2003 to build some cabinets. At that time I was a bit disappointed because the belt was slipping and the drill was not turning fast enough. This past week I was building a rear bumper for my semi truck out of 1/2" plate. At first, it was the same issue, belt slipping and too slow. Then I opened the top and realized it was a 5 speed (the older models did not have a sticker stating this). I changed the settings to the 5th speed and now the bit cuts through the plate like it butter and its no longer slipping. In total I drilled about 14 holes using a high quality 1/2" bit. I highly recommend this press drill.

All I can say is WOW!! This is a must-have for those strong DIYers. I purchased a couple weeks ago for two projects I had going on. Drilled holes in 1 1/4" square tubing for use as connector supports for the HFreight bench support with casters. I didnt use the casters that came with the kit. I added some 4" swivel casters w/ brake on my workbench to be easily moved and locked in place when needed. Also drilled holes in 2 3/4" thin wall steel pipe and added a 2 foot extension to the HFreight bench grinder stand so that I can adjust the height. This bench press drilled all holes cleanly and smoothly with no bogdown whatsoever. Given a good quality drill bit and lubrication I honestly believe this press can tackle more jobs than it is actually rated for. I strongly recommend plus the new upgrades like the addition of worklight, aluminum pulleys, and sure-grip handles makes this little gem of a bench press a must-have.

Got this today for a heck of a deal (on sale, plus a 25% super coop, plus a free screwdriver set)!. This is my first drill press. I need it right away for drilling true axle holes in the side of our pinewood derby cars for boy scouts. This is very difficult to do with a hand drill.

It set up fast and all parts were included. There was PLENTY of oil on the bare steel parts, you may need a rag! There were no directions for installing the chuck but it is a cone/press fit and I just tapped it on lightly with a wood block and hammer. Hope it stays on. The bench mounting holes accept 7/16" bolts and I used two 3" long X 7/16" diameter bolts to mount. My bench top is about 1" thick. Without the bolts it could be used but would tip over easily and would be kind of dangerous. So far, I let my boys drill 7/16" holes all of the way through a 2" X 8" board. It did not bog down at all. The on/off switch has a removable plastic key that is a great feature for curious kids. Speed is fairly easy to change, I had to loosen the motor hinge bolts a little bit the first time as they were too tight and the motor would not swing to relieve tension on the belt. This seems like a very well built unit for the price, and I am glad this new model was available when I needed a drill press. The flexible light is nice too. Highly recommended as a home, shop, or garage drill press.

Wanted a small bench drill press for smaller projects and hobby use in my basement, something which my large floor drill press in the garage was just really overkill for and this really fits the bill! Good build quality, like the change to aluminum drive pulleys (previous version had plastic), included work light (although I think I will replace the bulb, light is a bit yellow of my liking), and the comfortable new handles. Comes with a good 1/2" chuck that has very little slop, and heavy gauge stamped steel base instead of cast iron. Not sure yet if this is an improvement or not but out of the box it sat on my bench with zero wobble and seems strong enough. Drill press sets up easily and SQUARE, with very, very little runout on the chuck! (Haven't checked it yet for sure, but by eyeballing it I would say it is under .002 runout). Runs great, vibration free and seems solid. Great buy for its size, but just like all tools of this size, don't expect to be boring 1" holes through 1" steel plate with it. But for smaller stuff, can't beat it!

First of let me say I have enjoyed owning this press and used it several hundered times on over 100 projects in the last 2 years. Only problem I have ran into was the chuck constantly falling off after 1.5 years of ownership. After doing a little research I figured out over time it had either ground gaps in the chuck or spindle. Easy fix take chuck off get some loctite 609 or 620 retaining compound put it inside chuck knock it back on problem fixed FOREVER.
Be sure to use retianing compound not just loctite thread locker. The RC is designed to fill in gaps for cylindrical trapped applications.

I would caution buyers to make sure this is the right press for them. The press while great has limitions that could be a serious problem over time as they have turned out to be for me. This press has limited abilities when it comes to metal work or any work with hard materials and especially when making use of hole saws. This is due to the limited speed settings. The lowest is 760 rpm. This is way too fast for metal work. Will over heat bits, hole saws and destroy them very quickly even with cutting fluid being used.
If the vast majority of your work is in anything other than wood this is not the press for you. If you buy it you will end up later spending more money on the 12 speed heavy duty press. Be smart and just buy it from the start.

I purchased this tool for several woodworking projects and metal fabrication of custom computer cases. This being my first Bench Drill Press I was kinda excited to get it home. Works great and finally getting better results. However the instructions didn't completely match this product for setup. The Chuck was not attacthed to the motor head and no explanation on installing it. This is a BIG ERROR in publishing, then the diagram for depth guage is different from what is on the tool. I had to call a friend to get help with installing the chuck. Other than that I would have given this tool a full 5 star rating.
