I bought one of these to temporarily "stand-in for" the name-brand, big box home store green tester that came apart in my hand last night. My *preferred* replacement, a pricy Japanese non-contact tester, is on order - but I can't stop work while I'm waiting for it to arrive.

My example of this tester works and seems pretty close to the name brand green device I had been using at home. It may be just a bit less robust, but most of the name-brand testers seem pretty cheaply made these days too. If they don't cost a lot and still WORK reliably, I don't mind.

I was careful in the HF store to pick an example with good soldered connections and straight, well-mounted circuit boards: HF quality control could often bear some improvement. Looks like I got a good one... tho' I'd NEVER touch a bare wire or terminal on the say-so of ANY non-contact tester! I ALWAYS verify with a neon or VOM test, in direct contact with the wires!

Don't care if it's a[$] FLUKE tester. I'm not going to endanger my life by not making sure a voltage detector works before I handle a conductor. I have had LOTS of automatic testers that do not have a switch roll around and trigger when I am not there to shut it off and save the batteries. These things are inexpensive enough to carry two. With good lithium or alkaline batteries the chances of two simultenously going "bad" are mighty low. I did have a [$] fluke meter fool me on a 480 3Ø circuit, but I had sense enough to use a contact solenoid type tester before releasing the wire.

    You can find the hot wire from the ground without any other sorce. Great to check receptiles BEFOR you hava to open the cover plate. You can find the hot wire from the pair with the coating still on. (I had to bend the contact for the batteries to get it ot work, big deal.) One handy little to go into my work bag.

    make sure you check its on something like an outlet or a wall switch , then check what your working on and make close contact to metal area with tip of pen not your hand....otherwise good tool
