I have used this pipe cutter for over 20 years while building several houses. They might kick me out of the plumbers fraternity for this ,but the answers to the question "what two things you need to know to be a plumber" 1. stuff flows down hill and 2. payday is on Friday - well we must take for granted they have to know how to use a pipe cutter, so a short lesson for those spiraling out of control down the length of the pipe (grin).

Place the wheel where you want the pipe cut ( no really read the review where it almost cut where I wanted it)

lightly tighten the cutter knob.

Turn clockwise one revolution.

lightly tighten the cutter and make one turn counter clockwise.

If you continue in this manor it will most likely result in two pieces of pipe.

RE: table legs good for you girl ! Yeah you showed em ! Ha ! Good for you !

I am buying my second one due to my third wheel is about worn out , the extra wheels will allow me to have a spare.

I hope this is helpful.

Bottom line is if you have long pipe you would like to make shorter - buy one of these !

I used this to cut down some table legs that I purchased from [@] that happened to be longer than I wanted them to be, I came online and read the reviews and was a little offput... however when I compared the price to the going price for a similar item at a competitor I decided that I didn't need to spend extra money on something I would likely use only once, so I took a chance and I am sooo happy I did... I had no problems at all, the only complaint which really is nothing is that when I removed the item from the packaging it was really oily and grody. But I figure a little oil and dirt never put a handy person down so that's just my complaint. I used it and it was really easy to use AND I am a short girl so that says a lot.. the cuts were CLEAN I did not experience that spirraling so I figured after reading those other reviews that maybe people don't tend to write reviews when something works as intended and usually complain when something doesn't work, hence I felt compelled to write this review because I thought it was unfair to base a purchase based on someone else' bad experiences :) so I had a good experience for a beginer. BTW those [@] legs were pretty thick metal, at first I didn't think it would be able to handle it just by reading description online, but I was shocked to see how BIG this thing actually is AND that it worked like a dream :)

This tool is a great buy, cut thru 1/2" iron pipe like nothing. Also includes 2 extra cutting wheels. Be sure to check the package for the extra cutting wheels. There were three opened packages on the shelf, only one had the extra cutting wheels.

I used to this to cut some 3/4 inch iron pipe. I had no problems. The trick is to start with light tension and only really crank down on the handle once you form a groove in the pipe.

Just like many of the reviews on this site I think the negative ones come down to more user error than product failure.

As another reviewer wrote, the tool was not aligned properly so it spiraled down the pipe. I was able to get through it finally but the cut was not exactly where I wanted it.

Used a friend's pipe cutter before and liked the results. Bought one since I needed to cut 1 1/8" alloy pipe. Wanted a nice and easy straight clean cut, one that was better than using a hacksaw and didn't need (as much) filing.

Initial testing using this tool resulted in what looked like the tool trying to thread the pipe. The cutting wheel scored the pipe extremely inaccurately. If this is what others mean by walking, I'd say it was extremely drunk. I'm extremely disappointed.

I think I'd try to make it work by shimming the gaps to tighten up the moving parts and joints, to see if that improved the accuracy, but that seems like more effort than simple fashioning a cutting guide for a hacksaw.

I ignored the warnings of it walking all over the pipe thinking they did not know what they were doing. Wrong! It is truly is a loser.

From reading the positive reviews, it seems that quality control must vary greatly with this tool. I've used pipe/tubing cutters many times in the past so I know what I'm doing. This cutter is terribly mis-aligned. It's impossible to get a straight cut. I am trying to cut thin wall (.065") mild steel tubing. I used it as I've always used pipe cutters in the past. Add a light tension on the cutter, turn clockwise 360 degrees to get a groove started, add a bit more tension etc. It's so mis-aligned that it spirals over a 1/4" from the starting point on one revolution no matter how carefully and slowly you do it. If you can't get a straight groove started, it's pretty much useless. I've bought many good tools from HF but this is certainly not one of them. It's going back promptly.

The one I bought doesn't look like the one pictured from the website.

1.The one I bought has screws holding the slider.
2.The one pictured from the website is more like the Ridgid design where the part that slides is not held on my screws.

Alignment is bad. Screws will coem loose during use. The cutting wheel will fall apart FAST... I was cutting 2 inch gas pipes.

There are many good tool from harbor freight but, just not this pipe cutter or the electric pipe threader

Junk !! apply any pressure to the handle and the wheels turn causeing the cutter to spiral along the pipe .
