If you start with big bites, yes it will walk on you and try to cut a spiral. You have to take it slow, especially at first, and let it cut a small groove for the blade to travel in. Then tighten no more than 1/4 turn at a time, and when you tighten it, hold onto the opposite side (the side with the blade) to keep it from skewing while you are tighting it. As you bring it around, follow the blade with your eyes and make sure it stays in the groove. It's easy to back off a little and do it again if it looks like it wants to stray. Go slow, and be patient, and this works great. Go too fast, or expect it to cut straight with big bites, and you'll be dissapointed .. but don't blame the tool. And good luck finding anything else that will cut 3" tube for 20 clams. It took me about 2 minutes to figure this out and I wound up with just a very slight groove outside of my cut before I corrected it. After I got it figured out, I cut 3" copper pipe perfectly true.

Caught my eye when when I grabed a pipe threader kit

Very poorly machined. You can groove copper and PVC with it if you run extreamly slow and trace your step. Cutting wheels are wobbly. Attempted to further tighten to no avail.

I used on 1 1/4 maluable cast and could not get a clean cut. Tried several times and same thing, walk, walk, walk. Rather than return to shop for my other cutter i utalized my recip saw.

Cant recomend agenst this cutter enough.

This is just a poor quality, non-precision tool. The main problem is the cutting wheels are too loose and can't cut a straight line around a pipe. I took the first one I bought back. The second one was even worse.

Walks down the pipe. Cutters are poorly made. They chip easily.
