I'm using these to hone my PSI Versa lathe gouges. Versa's are similar to the Sorby Spindlemaster in shape, having a flat top that is honed, with the reverse being ground to resemble a fingernail.

I use the stones with Smith's Honing Solution (non-petroleum!) as the lubricant. As mentioned in another review, don't use a petroleum-based oil with these stones.

Make certain the stones are well supported or the plastic backing will bow and not work the way you expect ;-)

I started with a chipped knife,using a mild mixture of dish soap and water to keep the metal from packing up.Worked so well I did my wife's Kitchen knives,she liked them so well she asked to do her general use scissors,then her sewing scissors,then her cuticle clippers etc. etc..I now spend at least an hour a week keeping things sharp,but she is happy.Note to the person that had 3 different sets fall apart,you neglected to tell the part where you used OIL to do the lubricating,that is a no no.It dissolves the glue.

I used the hones to sharpen/reshape carbide and HSS lathe toolbits. After a couple of uses the diamond grit either is lost or breaks, the ffect is that you start wits say a 180 grade and end up with something that feels like a 400 grade cutting rate.
Is not great but is the only game in town for the price.

Like two other reviewers plates separated from backings right out of the package. Will be taking them back asap for some US made stones.

I planned on using these for sharpening wood chisels and plane blades. The diamond plates separated from the backing plates right out of the package, before I could even try them out. Hopefully I can glue them and salvage the purchase.

The fronts and color-coded backs fell apart / separated as soon as they were taken out of package. Tried 3 more packages and they all were defective / not glued together properly.
