I use this to smooth out roughed edges on the various blades like lawn mowers, machettes, and kitchen knives since it's too coarse to be a finishing stone. I soak this in water when not in use (this way I don't have to use as much oil as without) and put some oil on it so it can "bite" properly when shaping a blade. Using it as is or with water only for some reason doesn't work too well but once you use oil with it then it works fine. It's too coarse to be an only stone if you're aiming for a razon's edge for a pocket knife but good enough for a utility edge on blades that don't require such precision.

not bad for chistles and other things that dont need a razor edge but i'll stick to my natrutal arkansas whet stone for my knife.

A friend purchased this and brought it to me asking me to show her how to sharpen her clay/ceramics tools. Using it with liberal amounts of oil, it still wore down in record time. These are small blade tools & I'm no stranger to whetstones. If I could have given it 0 stars I would have.

I needed a stone for touching up small high speed steel lathe bits (1/4") and center drills for my Sherline. I saw this stone on sale and thought that for the price, I couldn't go wrong. I looked through the pile for one that wasn't too chipped up.

Well, I could go wrong and I did, because this miserable excuse for a whet stone couldn't even sharpen a pencil. One light-landed swipe with a cutting bit and the stone smooths over like a rotten banana. I am not SHARPENING bits, mind you, I do that with a diamond wheel. All I am doing is just touching up HHS for a fresh edge. I tried dry, with oil and water, nothing worked.

The fellow who left the review saying he had one of these for 30 years and it worked great could not possibly have the same stone. Maybe HF sold better stones 30 years ago. The one I bought is no better at sharpening metal than a rice crispy treat.

When you go to HF, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. This stone is a loser and no bargain at any price. Buy it and you will be sorry.

bought this to use a cheap stone to keep my machete sharp in the field. first strike and the blade literally bites into the stone and cuts a good 2mm deep gash into it. literally crumbles into black colored sand/dust.
