Not sure why revtech was having issues, mine worked fine, maybe he does need to return it. I bought mine for measuring distances to run, and I love that I can mark of meeters instead of converting the math for feet to meters. works fine in the daylight and even better in the evening. For the price, worth every cent.

This is great for people who need to measure interior spaces in businesses or homes. If you plan to use it outdoors especially on unpaved surfaces you might want to conside the more professional models use a small rubber bike tire. I like that it uses normal batteries. I looked at a few models that have a built-in battery that is supposed to last 5 years but cannot be replaced. The device is lightwieght and when extended can be used by just about anyone without having to bend over when measuring. The electronic counter is easy to operate and is large enough to be read while measuring. A good deal for the price in my opinion.

Tested in the setting sun. Same 75 foot length of driveway 5 times back and forth - 10 different results between 70 and 85 feet. Removed cover (4 screws) under label that clearly states "Do Not Remove". Mfg has modified internally (dark tape under that cover and dark paint halfway around axle housing)to block light but not well enough. Shine flashlight through wheel side of housing to see. Electrical tape entire wheel side (hubcap pops off and screw beneath to remove wheel) and top half of "front" side should solve the problem. I will test tonight in darkness and tomorrow in sunshine and report back only failure.

Took me a while to figure the sun through the case was overpowering the sensor. Duct tape wrapped from the readout to the battery opening and the whole side under the wheel fixed the problem. I have thought about spraying with dark paint, but don't want to disassemble the wheel to get to the side.
Good Price and I like how the handle shortens which makes storage easier.

Sunlight is penetrating the case and interferring with the light-reading mechanism inside. I put 3 strips of electrical tape around the yellow houseing and it works perfectly now outdoors. Maybe the case should have been a darker color to begin with.

Tried to measure a residential driveway in direct sunlight. Can't see the display in sunlight. Very frustrating. Go with the odometer version; it's cheaper.

Just as others have stated, a moron designed this and it has to be fixed so it will work in the direct sun. If the left side plate is painted or covered with dark tape it solves the problem. I love HF stuff but this is just part of getting items at 1/3 of the price you pay at the big box stores. I have found it to be very accurate. Fix the sun light issue and you have a good tool.

As others have mentioned, sunlight kills it.

Wrapping the housing in tape solves the problem. I painted mine Bl@ck to solve it permanently. (believe it or not, this system flags bl@ck spelled properly as profanity)

Measured a 100 foot tape three times, and each time it was within an inch, so it's accurate. 500 foot distances measured the same both ways four times, so it seems to be consisent as well.

I did notice a tendency for the handle to unlock if you don't twist it solid when locking it. If it does, it goes off track and you start over.

For the money, it's hard to beat if you fix the problem.

Like other reviews, it took me a while to figure out that it was the bright sunlight causing it to malfunction. I plan on painting the housing to see if that works and if so I'll update my review.
Other than the sunlight issue the unit works well and is accurate indoors.
I would recommend it as long as they're warned about the sunlight issue.

This device works fairly well as long as you are indoors or not in bright sunlight. It took me a while (and a new set of batteries which weren't needed) to figure out when it quit working the problem was trying to use the unit outside in bright sunlight. Could just be mine, but as soon as I returned indoors it started working again. -- The counter must use a light sensor to register each turn of the wheel, which is overwhelmed with bright sunlight and renders the unit useless. I almost returned it, but decided it was still useful indoors.
