You can't find a set more cost effective than this. I got mine for [$]. My rating is relative to the price, So if your thinking your getting top quality for [$], think again. They have better taps and dies, but this has worked for everything I've used it for. Biggest thing to remember with any tap and die set is to use lots of oil and go slow. I have tapped some steal with this but mostly use it to repair damaged bolts and studs and it works great. And it has a life time warrenty.

I bought a much earlier version of this product that had no instructions. Here are my instructions: Use screw pitch gauge to find the tap or die with the right thread. Screw the tap or die onto SOFT metal until it get's slightly hard to turn. Back off. Apply penetrating oil. Work the tap or die back and forth until proper screw length is obtained but don't go too far. On dirty or rusted or SOMETIMES on deformed STEEL bolts, use the same process but don't go further than the width of the die or where reasonable force will allow beyond this. Buy new nuts - don't tap them. Where a nut is not removable from what your fixing, use a tap employing the above process. You will need luck and lubrication. That's a poem to remember! Since this set is carbon steel, you will not be able to thread any steel from scratch. Don't try or you will wreck the die. That's a poem to remember!

Works for light duty

Comments about Pittsburgh 40 Piece Carbon Steel SAE Tap and Die Set:
I used these to tap some holes in aluminum. I was a bit skeptical using these, but only needed them for 4 holes. After looking at this cheap set,I figured I would give it a try. Like with all tap sets, lubricant must be used. I just used some PB Blaster laying around but cutting fluid would have helped more. In addition half turns followed by backing of to break the threads produced allows for proper threading. You can't just try and thread the tap the whole way.The only thing I would have liked better is if the tap threads were cut deeper. Looks like they are slightly rounded to help cutting with a cheap tool. All in all, product works well if used correctly and not trying to force the tool.

Good Value

I have both the "inexpensive" metric and SAE sets.... I never use them for iron or steel.. only on aluminum. Once on a brass part. By using adequate lubricant and tapping a hole close the the desired value, I have never had a problem with aluminum. Also, I use the die set for "cleaning" a thread, but here again, cutting steel threads will quickly dull the dies. Both sets perform as expected....

Good thing to have around.
By Frankenstein Motors

I bought this set to repair a really mangeled thread on a shift stick for an old Dodge truck I'm rebuilding. I work on all my vehicles myself and love to tinker around, stripped threads are a pain, but I don't deal with them often enough to feel the need to buy a 150-300 set that your big hardware stores offer.Yeah so this one is another 'foreign' product but hey, it's only 15 and it did the job. It was a little tricky getting it started, but a few drops of motoroil and it cut a nice clean thread and doesn't look like it took any signs of wear from it either. (I half expected to have to trash the die after the first use)

Works for me

I do alot of projects in my garage from minbikes and go-karts to lawn and garden equipment repairs. Plus I work on cars too. I've read the other reviews. Some of you I think forgot that these Tap&Dies are made from carbon steel not cobolt or titanium. They will break if not used right. So with that said, I"ve had no problems with this tools at all. And i use them all the time. Keep them well oiled guys.

Good Rethreading Option

About Me Casual Do-It-Yourselfer
Stripped a new strut. Faced with the choice of another $60 for a replacement strut, I picked this with my fingers crossed. It was able to rethread a badly cross threaded and stripped, hardened steel strut. The die and tap are both in great shape. If I never use it again, it paid for itself the first time

You get what you pay for

These work ok, I used them mostly for re-threading steel bolts, not a good Idea. I think that if you want this to last longer than a few weeks, stay away from steel and only use this set on soft metals.
Do not use on steel!
By Dennis
If you buy these understanding that you will NOT be able to thread steel, no matter how soft, then you will be satisfied. They can chase bolts and clean up threads on steel. They work fine on softer stuff like aluminum.
good for the price
By Graham
I wouldn't rebuild a Ferrari engine with this set, but it works fine for cleaning up threads. I've also tapped some holes with it successfully -- but make sure you have the right hole size to start with.I bought two of these, one SAE and the other metric, and they're really handy for car repairs.

Forget about cutting threads
By jeeper
This set is good for reconditioning old threads. It is also hard enough to handle steel. Forget about cutting new threads in a billet steel. Three taps/dies are needed - 1-for initial, shallow thread to 3 - complete thread. And this set has just one for each size.
