My tenant ran a whole bunch of leftover pasta down the garbage disposal, which settled below the floor in an elbow of the main drain pipe, then swelled and set like cement. My trusty snake couldn't touch it. I'd never used an expanding bladder before and was sort of doubtful, but I fired it up anyway. Ten seconds later, the clog was gone. I couldn't believe it was so easy I ran it for a couple of minutes to make sure the clog had all washed away.

Inserted into 1.5in. PVC pipe via clean-out access on side of house. Since the pipe was inset about 5in. from outer house surface, the bladder was difficult to get around the 90 deg. turn; it required a long flat piece of metal (like a long screwdriver) to do so. Turned on water at partial pressure; this did not create a tight enough seal in the pipe and the water and gunk came back out the clean-out access hole. Turned water valve full on and the bladder sealed and cleared the blockage without bladder rupture. You need a garden hose long enough to reach from water valve to the pipe access. No gunky snake cleanup needed with this method. Packaging warned of lead in brass looking connector.
