Ok, these cones are awful if used as they come. You will have bottles that drain in 10 minutes flooding everything. HOWEVER, if you just buy a $4 bag of play sand and fill each cone (leave a half inch space at the top) the one liter bottle will drip for about 2 hours and 2 liter bottles will drip for 4 hours. Note: because of the shape coke bottle seem to work best, the traditional soda bottle shape seems to get stuck sometimes preventing the water from flowing. For the one liter size, generic store brand soda bottle work as long as they are hard plastic rather than highly flexible and traditional round shape is fine for that size. I've raised lots of potted tomatoes, snap peas and flowers by using the cones in this manner and love them. Means I can fill up the bottles before work and they will drip through the hottest part of the day if using two liters).

Posted to Pinterest Because I love mine. Used for potted plants. I prepare ahead and grab bottle or two and pop into plant as I pass by. I can pick up empties on the fly too. Great way to recycle two liter bottles. I added tape to threads at bottle top to get tighter fit into cone. Fixes leaking.

I use the watering cones each year on my small garden. To avoid problems with the water bottles not staying secure in the cones, stay away from Sun drop bottles or any bottles that have a small caps.

I have used these several times... When the water goes through the holes..It goes straight to the roots and not on top of the ground...These are are a water saver..I have just bought 20 more packages in case harbor freight stops selling..

I have been useing these cones for a number of years.. When I start a new plant, I will place one of these cones buried to the bottom of the square piece (upright).. I can use a 2 liter or a drinking bottle. Some times the little holes get plugged, I will pull it out and clean it.. Yes sometimes the bottle will drain quickly, but you are watering the roots instead of the top of the ground. My way filling the bottles is with a 5 gallon bucket.Take a garden hose and fill the bottles in side of the bucket. After filling the bottles, I screw on the bottle caps and place them in a bucket or wheel barrow for transport to the plant. I highly recommend these to anyone. This is also a good way to fertlize your plants as well.

I expected these to have threads and be a bit of a challenge to change, but with out the threads it does make it quick and easy to fill and pop a new bottle on. Even my elderly mom had no trouble with changing.

Maybe I have different soil than some of the users, but other than the first use when the ground was dry, they take days to slowly drip in to the soil. I did make sure that I had pushed the cone down so the box for the bottle was at ground level. I also made sure they were level.

Not only would I buy more, I would recommend them as well. I hope that they keep selling them.

With the dry weather and new plants, these watering cones kept my important plants from dying. The water does drain fast from the bottle, but the water is going to the roots of the plant in the ground. I used these cones many times this summer.

Started using these about mid-April to water an 8 square foot area where I had planted radishes. I used all 6 stakes and 2L bottles. The soil here is pretty dense with clay mixed in and pretty wet to begin with. I figured that after a bottle or two, the ground would get saturated and the water would stay in the bottles. Not the case. In a couple of hours, I had put over 35 gallons of water into that 8 square feet! I pulled out a couple of stakes and I could see water in each hole about 2 or 3" below the surface. The ground was saturated, but the water still flows out of the bottles in a non-stop fashion. I've been filling the 6 bottles 1 time just about every day for about 6 weeks now as the only source of water other than rain. The radishes are still alive. However, I would say that it's easier to use a hose of some sort (drip, soaker, sprinkler), but if getting water to the location is a problem, then I guess these stakes and bottles are the best way to carry the least amount of water possible.
They might work better if used in a large pot?
