I researched several shredders and settled on this one because it appeared to have sufficient power at a good price (including a c0up0n) and the shredding design (material for shredding goes straight down the chute past the chopping blades)seemed the least likely to clog. I also looked for an electric start but that only comes with units over a thousand d0ll@rs. As a woman in her 60's I abhor recoil start machines that are troublesome for a person without a lot of arm-power. This one starts like a breeze. I had a lot of tree and shrub prunings to deal with. I had already sent a bunch away with my trash hauler until the idea struck me that I could turn it into mulch for my landscape beds. It did well on crisply dried leafy branches as well as freshly pruned oak. I clipped side branches from any limbs over 1" and kept the branch for firewood/kindling. I clipped anything over 3/8" down to the naked branch and set that aside for the chipper chute. Then I proceed to chip and shred. Wonderful results. Many of the thicker branches that went through the shredder chute did not get ground up, but rather were chopped into 3 to 6" segments. I raked the larger of these out of the pile and ran them through the shredder again. The littler segments are ok with me mixed with the shredded stuff. I found that as I picked up a branch even if I thought it was less than 3/8" if I could easily drive it into the chute to gnaw up a good portion of the thick part of the branch I would, and then pull out the remainder (the finer, leafy end) and drop it in the chute for shredding.I was annoyed with the difficulty in getting access to the oil and fuel fill inlets. For the oil fill, I rigged a small plastic funnel with a piece of thick plastic tubing I had lying about. The tubing JUST fit the neck of the oil fill inlet and was stiff enough to sort of hold the funnel upright. I could then hold the oil bottle in one hand and the funnel in the other, pour in some oil, put the oil bottle down, pull out the tube and look at the level, and repeat. Tedious. The equipment came with a small amount of oil in it but I had to add 14 oz more. I was glad I protected the driveway asphalt with a piece of cardboard as I did dribble quite a bit of oil. Make sure you check that you have the materials so you can fill the oil comfortably. Same issue with the fuel fill inlet-- it sits directly under the slanting wall of the shredder chute. You can't see down into the neck of the fuel tank to see the fuel level. So I tied a portable bathroom mirror (one with hooks so you can hang it in the shower)to the underside of the shredder chute so I could see down into the neck to see the red plastic doohickey that says how far to fill. Nor could I get anywhere near the neck of the fuel inlet with my 5-gal gas can. I purchased a funnel with a clear plastic flexible tube and an integrated handle. I used a spring clamp to clamp the funnel's handle firmly to the chipper/shredder handle and snaked the tube down to the fuel filler inlet. As I filled, I had to remove the tube from the inlet so I could inspect the fuel level using the mirror. You might be able to get away with a 1-gal gas can with a long tube spout. For me, the funnel was cheaper than a new gas can. Of course, I did not leave the funnel attached during shredding/chipping.The choke lever is not clear in its marking which way the choke is closed versus open. Start a cold engine with the choke lever to the left and move it to the right as the engine warms up.I was able to start the engine easily.Shredding and chipping went well. Had no jams. I did not over-tax it by rushing things or going beyond the performance specs. I put tape marks on the upper edge of the shredder chute for 3/8" and 1 1/4" to keep me within specs. I watched the pile underneath the machine so it didn't build up too high. I used all the safety gear the instructions recommended and it was important that I did-- sometimes small chips shot up the shredder chute past the flaps. And dry leaves make a lot of dust.Don't leave any branches in the shredding or chipping chutes after you turn it off, else it will hinder the ability to start it again.Overall this machine is exactly what I need for the job in the yard. I live in a subdivision and I have a half acre with a lot of landscape trees and shrubs. They have matured to the point that spring will involve a lot of pruning now and this relieves me of bundling for trash pickup and I get free top-mulch. And the engine is not any noisier than a lawnmower so no annoyance to the neighborhood.

After looking at many stores for chipper shredders, I bought one in the summer of 2011 because it seemed to fit all my needs, and it looked sturdy with good cutting blades. Luckily, I decided to invest in the extended warranty from Harbor Freight. I used it 2-3 times, a total of 2-3 hours and it worked very well. The following spring of 2012 it wouldn't start (drained all gas and oil before putting it away for the winter.)I spent 2 hours trying to get it working, deemed it was the carborator and would not start. I returned it to Harbor Freight along with the unreadable receipt which I asked them about. They said their receipts needed to be kept in a cool place or they would fade, which they did not tell me about when I bought the shredder. They did, however, have it on their computer and honored my extended warranty and replaced it with a new one. I also reluctantly bought another extended warranty for $50. I used it twice for a total of no more than 2 hours and it worked wonderfully. I decided to use it again a week or so later and it would start up as if it was going to turn over, and then died. I again worked with it for 2 more hours and found the choke lever was not engaging the choke. I again, with much troube and frustration, loaded it up and returned it to Harbor Freight. This time my receipt was still legible and they did return my money as well as the extended warranty. I will not be buying another chipper shredder. Also, when confronted about their disappearing ink receipts, the manager replied they had mentioned it to management, but they refuse to do anything.

Comments about Central Machinery 5-1/2 Horsepower Chipper Shredder:
I bought this based on reviews. I have several very large shrubs that need regular pruning. Most branches are 1" or less. This chipper ate them up. No more dragging them curbside. I had a pile of branches about 4 feet tall by 8 feet long. I turned this pile into about one cubic foot of fine mulch. Couldn't be happier. Now I'm looking for other stuff to prune just so I can use this thing. I didn't ever grind to a halt as some others have mentioned. It did get bunched up but I used a 2x4 to shove the branches/leaves into it. I only had it about 1/2 throttle and it ate the end of the 2x4 off. The engine is very quiet and started on the 2nd pull. I'm very happy with this one, especially since I got it at 20% off,

About Me Do-It-Yourself
I own this machine for over two years now. I still like it like the first day I bought it. I did a lot of reseach before I settled on this one based on the high ratings and low price. It is built on heavy gauge steel. The engine is solid and always starts on first or second pull even after storage. I used it to shred/chip leaves, twigs, vine, prunings up to 1 inch. It does the job nicely. It does jam occassional but only when I stuff wet and rotten leaves in it. Maybe all shredder will? The only thing I don't like is once jamed, you have to remove several nuts at front panel to clean it. But once I got a hold of it for what shouldn't go in there, it never jam again. Overall, this is the best shredder/chipper for the money.

This machine starts on first pull every time and runs perfectly...Shut the fuel off and let it run out, EVERY USE! Bought this for kitchen waste, yard debris and log splitter debris. Screen will clog if any wet material is processed. Remove screen and process material, then allow to dry several weeks, reinstall screen and double grind material and it produces a fine even mulch. Not really practical for branches because of it's limited size of 1.25", but it will grind anything else that you throw at it! Use a 12" 2x4 as a push tool. This works best for me. I did not have any problems adding fuel or oil as others have claimed to have had. Overall a great machine for a great price, within it's limitations.

Great tool for the realistic

The best idea I had was to read these reviews. To trick out this baby consider getting bigger wheels to improve ground clearance or build a stand. I did this for my last c/s and it worked well. The other opportunity in getting this baby off the ground is that it makes it so much easier to maintain. I made my stand out of 2x4s and landscape timbers. Cut timber to 24 long/need 4. lag screws them together face to face. Then cut 2x4'long enough to lag to end grain of landscape timber. This should create 6-8" of ground clearance depending on the timbers. Same for front stand with enough room to hole the U shaped leg. For extra safety I drilled holes on each end of the stands and drove rebar into the ground. Sandy soil/no problem. As to fill issues, I bought a 60 cent plastic articulating neck that screws on to my plastic bottles of oil and it worked great. I also bought a funnel with a long flexible spout at HF threaded the long spout between the handle and the outside top of the chip/shred hopper and rested the end of extension tube inside the gas filler. Pour slow and it works like a champ. This is a great home gardner unit. It's unrealistic to think this unit is going to chew up a tree

Simple assembly. Added the oil via a transmission fluid funnel and bought a plastic funnel with a long tube to put the gas in the tank. Fired right up on first try. Used it to mulch up some over grown crape myrtle trees. Works great. Load, use earplugs. And safety glasses with gloves. Would recommend a long sleeve shirt too as the branches will scrape your arms as feeding them into the hopper. It will grind up larger limbs through the top if you feed them in slowly. At about 1 1/2 foot length is as short as you can the bigger limbs. If you let it go in the top the hopper it will jam the machine and stop in. Easy fix, just take the 8 screws off on the side and clean out the blade area. Without this today I would have generated 3-4 big bags of tree limbs for the trash guy. Now I have some great mulch to use in the back yard. It grinds it up very finely.

this is a sweet chipper use the hell out of it put the hurt to it. I haven't had any problem with it. don't complain you payed three bills for it, so if it craps out buy another one, its better than buying on for grand or more for the same job :)!!!!!!!! harbor freight you got my vote keep up the good work...... beside you get what you pay for, for the people that have small yards this is the best thing to buy its quiet small and will shred anything you can get down in the hopper, if it break's down I will buy anther one I just love it... hopeful this is some help to others, ive had mine for three years I use mine alot in the summer time
Great For the Money!
Works much better than expected. Like the other reviewers say, you will need to remove screen before grinding too much green stuff or it will definitely clog up.Much happier with this than the auger I got.
great help with yard clean-up

Before I bought this Chipper I was considering a $1,000.00 unit, but that's a huge chunk of my budget so I kept "sleeping on it".A few days later I received a Harbor Freight flier that listed this Chipper for [$], I read the reviews on their web site as well as those listed else where. Armed with the information learned, I bought a little Harbor Freight 20oz oil pump that comes with a flex line $5.00, a fuel funnel that also comes with a metal flex line another $5.00, and of coarse, the chipper. The chipper was packaged well and complete. The simple assembly went fine with the included tools. I definitely needed the oil and fuel tools I mentioned earlier. After setting the choke, throttle, and start switch to their proper position, the engine started on the first pull.I readjusted the throttle and gave the unit a quick test by feeding it a few branches and a 1 1/4 inch limb. It ate them up. Gloves and eye protection are a must. So far I'm very pleased, and we've gotten off to a great start, we'll see how it continues to handle my over grown yard. For the money it seems like a great addition to my growing yard tools.
