I've had my set over 10yrs and have probably drilled hundreds of holes. Large bits this size MUST be used at slower speeds and with cutting oil, or you'll burn them up. Also work best in a larger drill press or milling machine. I've drilled wood, aluminum, and mild steel (up to 1/2" thick). With too much pressure, you can bend the shafts. The larger bits will require a pilot hole with a smaller bit to save drilling time. Sharpening larger bits like this is not too hard to do by hand. You can't touch an American made set for anywhere near this price.

The key to using a silver & deming is super slow speed. Slow enough so you can watch the flute on the drill bit. I use these in my HF metal lathe for boring large holes and I turn them at appx 60rpm. That is 1 rev. per second. If you turn them much faster you will burn them up no matter what brand they are or what you are boring into. Just go super slow and use lots of oil if drilling into metal of any kind.

I have had these for 4 years. They work great. Like any other drill bit, you have to run them at the correct speed with lubrication. I have drilled hundreds of holes without sharpening them yet. One bit in this size range costs the same as this set.

I drilled some A36 1/4" hot rolled steel with the 9/16" and 5/8" bits with no problem. I stepped drilled using plenty of oil and lifting the quill regularly to clear the chips. I ran the drill at 300 RPM. Don't push them hard and fast and I think they will last.

The Drill Doctor 750X sharpened the four smallest bits. The larger ones will have to be touched up by hand. Must be turned very slow and washed with coolant or oil.

Use these at the intended speeds and they work just fine. I'm very happy with these bits especially for the price.

i agree that they are not very sharp. they worked very well after sharpening. it says high speed steel bits because that is what the metal they are made of is called not the speed that they are to be used. any metal cutting should be done at a slow speeds with lots of drilling fluid. the box is poor but i didnt buy them for the box. think these will last a long time. i like these bits very much and would buy them again.

These were indeed a good deal for the whole set. But, they sure wobble around a lot when spinning.

You can chuck on the flats or round parts of the bit shafts. I used an indicator and measured which chucking position gave the least runout for each bit. Some had more runout on the flats while others had more runout on the round part. I wrote a chart with all those numbers and I keep it in the box so I know how to chuck each bit.

If you're drilling something 1" or larger, you'll end up stepping through all of the bits for every hole so this does matter.

These bits work good if you run them at a medium to slower speed. I burned up 3 bits trying to run them high speed and that was with a pre-drilled pilot hole. Slow them down and they'll work just fine.

I needed a 9/16" bit for a woodworking project and did not want to use a spade bit. The 9/16" was the only one in the set with a 1/2" shank. I was disappointed to see the rest of the bits had a 3/8" shank.
