I have 4 units. The first one that I bought was because I had a leak from the hot water tank piping next to the hot water tank. A month later it alarmed because the hot water tank was leaking and I was able to isolate the tank quickly. I immediately bought 3 more and installed them in areas that would create a real problem if there was an undetectable leak. Cheap insurance. It would be nice if it was a lot louder. But again, that would get into using up the battery in an alarm condition.

They use 9v batteries and I replace them once a yr when I replace the smoke detector batteries.

This does the job if you're within earshot. Compared to one I bought recently at another retailer, I prefer this one. The beep seems slightly louder, and it is a very rapid on/off chirp (not a continuous tone), so it's unlikely to blend into background noise. Or if you prefer, a melody is switch-selectable. The sensor is at the end of the 7-FOOT cord, so you can put the sensor almost anywhere, while putting the beeper where you can reach it. You can also turn it off when not in use or after you've responded (with the other retailer's model, you have to remove the sensor from the water or remove the battery). I'd prefer inexpensive AAA batteries vs. the 9-volt this uses, but smoke detectors, etc., use 9-volt, so maybe there's a good reason. The sensor cord is a very light-gauge, but seems durable enough if you keep it out of harm's way. And finally, although I can't say if the electronics are long-lasting or not (I've had it for a couple years but only used it the past 8 months), the construction of the plastic components is compact, attractive and durable -- no ugly exposed solder connections to break or whatever. Note: I'm not sure if it has a low-battery warning or not.

A great inexpensive flood alarm, especially for areas or basements that arent frequented daily. I liked the first one so much that I bought one for a friend.

The description says this alarm runs on AAA batteries, it doesn`t, it uses a 9-volt battery which is really annoying for me.
