ive owned several different brands of these portable gas power soldering pens. this is the best one ive ever owned. it doesnt lose gas and works great. i would advise strongly useing triple refined gas in it.it also works good for soldering plastic with the knife blade. play pretty !

First turn on the pencil to about 3/4. Point the flame into the hole making the "pad" glow red. Quickly screw on the top half. The flame will turn off, but the "pad" will remain glowing red. Adjust to your desire, your ready to rock and roll.

OK, was going to give only a 1 star since getting this thing lit up is a pain. Fear not, found a quick and easy way to light her up. Basically, do not screw on the upper half, first light up the pen, put at about 3/4 flow, point the flame inside the upper tip where the "pad" is located. Once glowing red, slip the upper part of the torch (the flame will turn off, but the "pad will remain read) and screw down. Your ready to rock and roll. Hope this helps everyone out. Now I give it 5 stars.

I agree with all of you about the lack of instructions and difficulty with understanding how this product works. I will tell you and hopefully keep this product available. Product is sold in 3 parts,hense the name "3-in-1-torch. Make sure you have good butane and fill the main base of the torch. The solder point should be already attached to the top part of torch witch has to be screwed on to the base.After screwing it on,get a lighter, push the red on/off button to on,pull up on the part you screwed in,(at the base),light it by holding the flame from your lighter in the holes leading to the torch itself.You dont want the flame to come out the top by the solder point but remain inside the shaft itself. After you see it lit, slightlly adjust the gasfor real blue flame. After you relax the top shaft wich is spring loaded you should see a red glow in the hole right underneath the solder point itself.(NOT A FLAME.)Practice will make you perfect.

Unless you get a dud this is a great little tool I mainly use it for installing radios,car alarms,remote starters, hitch wiring, ect.It's great for heat shrink tubing and wood burning projects. A little common sense will go a long way using it. And I find most people do not know how to properly fill butane tools/lighters. When empty you must turn on the valve and let it clear out air then while still filling close valve and hold can tightly for about 30 seconds. You will notice you get quite a bit longer burn time out of the tool. Also keep the tips clean. Gave it 4 out of 5 due to no case to protect it in tool boxes and it's not self igniting. Hope this helps.

In these reviews there are 2 lighting techniques described.

In one, the user lights it by pulling down on the spring-loaded portion of the tip and getting a flame in the holes at the base. I have got this to work a couple times, but not consistently.

So I stick to the other method. I preheat the pad and then slide the tip over the flame and screw on.

I bought this to use for soldering. It has performed poorly. It doesn't get hot enough at the tip- it's just a little too cool for semi-intricate soldering. It gets plenty hot if you move to a little thicker part of the tip. I have found the tip hard to keep tinned. Overall I am disappointed with it for soldering.

I did grind the tip down a bit in the hopes that it would dissipate less heat if it was shorter. This did improve it. Overall HF needs to rework it just a hair so that the tip is closer to the heat to make it get hot enough.

In conclusion, you can solder with it, but it is not the greatest.

For my job I needed a small PORTABLE general use soldering iron. This was perfect size. Big con for me is there isn't a built in ignition. You have to carry around a lighter with you. However, it gets the small projects and repairs done.

i bought mine on sale and not a bad buy. only problem with it is that if you have soldering tip screwed on it is hard to light and keep it lite to solder wire. for the soldering of copper tubeing like in small air condiontioners it works great. ive found triple refined gas works the best in these small pocket tourches. it usually cost a few cents more but the pencil will preform a lot better. like day and night.

As a torch, it works fine. As any type of device with the tips installed, I'm baffled. The two included tips get very warm to the touch but certainly not hot. I let the torch burn for about two minutes to get to the "very warm" state. I'm probably not using the tips correctly, but the lack of instructions haven't cleared up any misuse.
