I had several of these that stopped working and I opened them up to see why. If you open yours up, you will see a little plastic tab that keeps a piece of metal pushed forward. Its the metal piece that the release button pushes on (at bottom).

At the top, that tab will break when under medium amount of pressure. I got a piece of wood (oak) that I cut to the length of the interior thickness (so grain is facing you). I had to use a chisel to get it to fit just right, but now, there is no way that sucker is breaking.

But, mine broke again in another spot, and thats the pivot point of the squeeze bar (orange thing). I plan on drilling it out and putting a small bolt through it.

No doubt, these clamps break after a while.

They are designed wrong.

But they can be made a whole lot better, and it is better to do that before they break than after.

Here is how: Unscrew the cover plate and remove the orange grip (its loose in there) notice where the nubs are on the cover, and under the the orange grip that fit into that orange tightening grip. Find a 1.24" by #8 machine screw and a drill bit to fit it snuggly and drill through the cover plate with a drill press through the nub (or where the nub was broken off). Do the same thing with the base. Screw the screw up through the bottom of the base. put the handle on it. put the cover on and screw the screw through it. Put the cover plate screws back on and get some locktight and put it on the thread of the screw and lightly tighten a nut on with a pair of pliars. It should work right away and it won't break again (there at least)

      Wrong price in magazine

Comments about 12" Ratchet Bar Clamp/Spreader:

Don't have this product but advertised price in a popular woodworking magazine is completely different than in the online catalogue. Most likely will not get one because of other reviews about quality, strength etc. I thought Harbor Freight was more professional that this?

the clamping mechanism on this clamp applies very little clamping force.

If you try to apply more force the mechanism simply slips.

At maximum clamping force you can actually easily pull this clamp off the workpiece(s)

The pivot pin broke almost immediately. I bought 2 at their low prices so I figured nothing ventured, nothing gained. I disassembled them, found the broken pivot, drilled it out and used a bolt. They both work great now. If they break again, I didn't lose much,

I broke 4 of these clamps on first use (clamping a small wooden wren house for glueing). The fulcrum of the pistol-grip should be the strongest part of the clamp because it converts hand grip pressure to clamp pressure. In this product it is not a metal rod or screw, it is a hollow plastic shaft that breaks under light-medium pressure rendering the clamp useless. Trash at a cheap price is still trash.

I bought a several of these because of the great sale price, but every one broke on first use. The fulcrum of the pistol grip is a hollow plastic shaft that breaks upon light-medium pressure (clamping a small wooden birdhouse for glueing). That shaft takes all the force of the clamp and SHOULD be the STRONGEST part of the clamp. I suspect that the product would be satisfactory if they had used a metal pin or screw as a shaft. Trash at a cheap price is still trash

Comments about 12" Ratchet Bar Clamp/Spreader:

These are definitely not the same quality as the brand-name versions you'll find elsewhere. I was using a pair of them to hold a metal yardstick in place as a jigsaw guide on a piece of plywood. I am not a gorilla and wasn't using excessive force but the squeeze levers broke off both of my clamps almost immediately. The levers are secured and pivot on flimsy pegs molded into the insides of the plastic handles. With the design and materials involved there's no way they will hold up to even marginal leverage force on the lever. Now, here's the catch. I drilled through the handles where the pegs broke off, ran a screw through the handle and trigger with a nylock nut on the other side and now they work like champs. It was a 2 minute, 5 cent fix and they're back in service and strong enough for use in the real world. If the manufacturer would just use a bolt or a pin in the first place, these things would be a deal at twice the price.Worth fixing if you already have them. Only worth buying if you're going to fix them before you use them. I got them on sale for like [$] each and now that they're fixed, I'm not looking to replace them with a more expensive brand-name.
