I am Harbor Freights biggest fan, but this soldering gun was a disaster. I'm not sure if it was defective because even though it did get hot, it was in no danger of melting the tip as I have read on some other reviews. It barely melted solder on two spliced 16 Gauge wires. I was trying to use it to install a remote car starter and had to give up after the first soldered connection and go out and buy a craftsman 150/230watt gun that worked great (the closest Harbor Freight is about 1 hour away from me). Based on how poorly the Harbor Freight gun performed, I am inclined to think it was defective. I will try exchanging it for another one next time I am close to a Harbor Freight and give it a shot.

Comments about Chicago Electric Power Tools 180 Watt Industrial Soldering Gun:

This gun was okay for a few uses. The tips are very poor quality. I replaced the tips but the gun didn't last long enough to make it worthwhile. The plastic melted and I deemed it too dangerous to use. Spend a bit more and buy a quality product.

Comments about Chicago Electric Power Tools 180 Watt Industrial Soldering Gun:

So many people criticize the tool. Probably they used the wrong tool for the job. I like the gun, heats up fast, reliable, and regarding the tips, when they burn out I will make a ton of them from copper wirring. I did repaired several things with it already and it paid for itself easily.

Comments about Chicago Electric Power Tools 180 Watt Industrial Soldering Gun:

Near-impossible to beat the price. This gun works, provided you don't abuse. Take the tip to temperature and then release the trigger before applying to the joint. Holding it longer will shorten tip life just as it will with any brand on the market.

The first time I used the gun, it didn't heat up enough to melt the resin then I tightened the tip bolts and it worked but the tip burned up almost immediately. Now I need tips for it. I only used it one time.

This gun heats up fast but thats where it stopped. Could not get wire to take the soilder, tried 3 different rolls on it. The tips are trash and cant find replacement tips at HF. Bought one at [@] that would fit. Gun over heated with new tip and is now in garbage.Spend a few extra $$ and get a good gun the 1st time

I bought this thinking that I would be better than the cheaper models without lights

and all the added stuff. Tips both or all three broke and didnt last the night. Simple

job like foglamps on grandsons truck, and I had to go and buy a cheaper model

                              but not as fancy.
