Comments about Chicago Electric Power Tools 500 Amp Carbon Pile Load Tester:

4 gauge wire has a amp capacity of 90 if its 17 feet of copper clad alum or 22 feet of oxygen free copper. The leads on this is 4 feet of solid copper which would give you a amp capacity of roughly 500. so the fishy part is your actual knowledge of electrical.

Comments about Chicago Electric Power Tools 500 Amp Carbon Pile Load Tester:

Bought my first 500 amp load tester a week ago, out of the box despite having 'zero' adjust screws, the voltmeter was inaccurate. Although zero'd before use compared to a known good multimeter it was off by .5V, which doesn't sound like much but can very well be the difference between pass and fail. trying to zero the voltmeter while hooked up to a battery did not work b/c there was not enough room for adjustment it was still off by .5V The amp meter seems to be working ok, though there is no way for me to check its accuracy.Everything else works fine.Returned that one, new one, out of the (undamaged) box the volt meter does not work at all!!! removing the 2 screws that hold the clear face plate over the gauge revealed a very thin broken wire that is soldered to the needle, broke. Seems that any jarring can easily break this very thin wire. This tool is becoming more of pain by the day when i'm returning to the store 2 times in a week. There are other tools on the market that are up to $200+ but appear to be exactly the same(maybe the guts are better?) as this, down to the sticker voltage vs temperature chart and its placement. I will try for the third one b/c the price is really just that good, and i hope its voltmeter gauge works well so i dont have to use both a mulitmeter and this load tester at the same time, b/c of the poor quality built in voltmeter. On the third one i think i'm going to purchase the extended warranty b/c i can see this part breaking easily(even if it works ok initially). Good thing i didnt mail order it...aside from the problems w/ the voltmeter everything else seems great on this tool. But based on the voltmeter problems i've been doubting its amp meter's accuracy.

    good stuff

Comments about Chicago Electric Power Tools 500 Amp Carbon Pile Load Tester:

considering a real one would cost in the hundreds mark, this is a great deal. biggest complaint is that the knob can be rotated many times around. this is potentially dangerous. I will probably rebuild it so you can get full function with a 300 deg twist of the wrist. that is the only complaint though.

    Multi Purpose Instrument

    By IT Guy

    from Undisclosed

Comments about Chicago Electric Power Tools 500 Amp Carbon Pile Load Tester:

I tried the 500 Amp Load Tester on UPS Batteries (Uninterrupable Power Supplies) and it appears to be effective.

Many of these type 12v lead-acid batteries have Amp hour rattings as low as

10 Ah. Thanks to the precise control provided in the Load control it is easy to

set the test properly without "over loading" these small batteries.

Appears to be equally effective on any Auto, Marine and Truck battery appications as well.

Have not had an opportunity to try the engine starter test but look forward to the first opportunity.

Looks like another winner for Chicago Electric and Harbor Freight. Thanks
