I purchased 4 of these (2 of them were 12" and 2 of them were 6"). I uses them mainly for mounting my reloading press to a table, and other clamping needs. Of the 4, 2 of them broke within the first use or two. One of my 12" clamps and one of my 6" clamps broke. It seems like the ratcheting mechanism is made from plastic, and if you apply very much pressure at all to the trigger, the entire mechanism snaps and crumbles, and the trigger breaks completely off.

If you look at the clamps there are two different handle types. One of them has a trigger that is more of a rounded shape. The other is more pointy. I had two of each, and the ones with the rounded triggers are the ones that are still alive, so maybe they are a little more durable, or maybe it's a coincidence.

So, if you want to take your chances on a product that could break the first time you use it, grab one with the rounded handles. Otherwise, get something made of metal, not plastic.

Broke the first time I used it.

Comments about 6" Ratchet Bar Clamp/Spreader:

I use clamps for various projects around the house. I bought 2 of these and both broke the first time I used them. The molded plastic bosses(nubbs)used as a pivot on the clamping handle snapped. On a plus note they are repairable. I replaced the bosses with a steel nut and bolt of the appropriate length. This part should be steel to begin with. If you don't mind redesigning and repairing something that is new, then they are ok for the price. Otherwise pay more and get more.
Others have commented in more detail on how to do the same fix. After the repair they worked good for light weight clamping. Since they are repairable with 50 cents of common hardware I gave it 2 stars. Ohterwise they would not be worthy of even one star.

This thing is a piece! Very flimsy design. I tried it in the store and thought it would work pretty well, it was very smooth with ease of operation so I bought 2. The very first time I used it the release button broke. I would not recommend this product. I have several quick release bar clamps that I love and they work great. If you want a good clamp buy them! I had to silicone the pads on, they fall off easily. Not meant for heavy use but the work good for holding things as a third hand.

Can't tighten very tight, internal mechanism breaks easily... also rusts easily. cheap and virtually worthless.

See review under 12" size. The weakest link in this clamp is the plastic pivot for the rachet mechanism. Drill out and replace with a #8 Screw and nut. This increases the strength of the clamp tremendously.
