I have a 2007 Camry, Check engine light came on. Before I took it to the dlr I wanted to know what was up. The unit plugs in under the dash, the menu is logical, and gives you the actual code, as well as what the code means. The problem was a bad coil. MY car has a V6, which means 3 of the coils are hidden beneath the intake stuff, and require removing the intake manifold.
The bad coil was on the back side of the engine, so I went ahead and had the dlr fix it. If my car was a 4 cylinder, or if the bad coil was on the front bank of cylinders, I could have easily fixed myself and saved a lot of money.
Bottom line, great tool to have.
You can make sure your mechanic is being honest about what the problem is.

I have a 03 Sonoma that would get a check engine light but it would go off after a week or so. used this to figure out the exact problem and fixed it. Good to have around in case of another CEL

Just purchased and used this tool and used it on my Dodge Caravan and Dodge Durango. Works great. Very intuitive menu system. Does what it supposed to do for low end OBD II reader / scanner.

Seems to be similar to unit from Autel Model Autolink 301.

FYI my HF store did not stock any of the other OBD readers offered on the HF website.

I've drooled over code readers for years but since I don't repair cars for a living I put it off since I could usally beg, borrow, or steal one from a friend or relative when I needed one. (I come from a family of motorheads) I bought this one cuz of the low price and the fact my wife's 2005 Bonneville's check engine light had come on. Glad I did! This handy little unit told me the code, what it meant, and provided freeze frame data in relation to the code. It even reads the VIN of the car, and clearing codes is a breeze. The instructions are rather vague, but the unit is so easy to use that this isn't much of a problem. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a quality code reader for personal use, or even for a "beater" unit in the shop when you don't require the higher functions of the professional units (ABS and Airbag codes).

Great value! For this price, I thought it would only display a code. Used to have a $150 one years ago, but this one does just what I need. Provides more than just the code by adding what the code means too. Helped me resolve the problem instantly and plan to use the next time I see the dreaded check engine light.

Reads codes accurately. After retrieving codes Google the codes for your specific make/model. Repair. Then reset codes.

I have needed a reader a number of times over the years and decided to pick this one up since it was on sale. It looked to be of good quality and when I opened it up I was surprised by just how well made this unit is. Upon power-up I was again surprised by the quality of the back-lit display. The menus are easy to navigate and the codes are listed along with the error message. Clearing the codes is a breeze. Very good value for a basic reader.

working on new cars is great. you get a check engine light, you read the code and most the time you can replace a sensor or a switch with basic hand tools and be on your way. a code reader is a must have in the toolbox of the home mechanic.
This one was easy to use and inexpensive.

The telltale light....always at the wrong time. This unit couldn't be easier to use. The instructions are actually a bit more complicated. This item worked perfectly for me, connected easily with my Tacoma, and identified the correct oxygen sensor. I would purchase again. Well done Harbor Freight.
