Description

Cylinder leak-down tester gives you valuable information about the engine’s compression. Pressurized air is supplied to each cylinder, and the rate of leakage is measured in percent loss from 0% to 100%. Cylinder leakage gauge makes it easy to conduct leak-down tests that are more accurate than standard compression tests. Tester kit includes pressure gauge, cylinder leakage gauge, 12mm and 14mm spark plug adapters, quick connect/disconnect hose and air regulator.

  • 0 to 100 PSI working pressure
  • Easy-to-read gauges for proper testing and accurate results
  • Easy-to-adjust air regulator
  • For all domestic and imported engines
Includes blow mold storage case
Shipping Weight: 4.55 lbs.

Comments about U.S. General Cylinder Leak-Down Tester:

Do Not Buy this product. The tool is not designed properly. A true leak-down tester can measure differential pressure between the input source and the leak. This tool does not have a differential pressure chamber. The leakage measuruing gauge maxes out at 15 psi where you really need to input 100 psi

Lousy, incorrect instructions, but seems to work at 10psi

        By Keith

        from Undisclosed

Comments about U.S. General Cylinder Leak-Down Tester:

As mentioned below, "0" Set needs to be done with the unit not plugged into the spark plug hose. Pressure is 10psi at this point, and the loss gauge shows the percentage loss, once plugged into the hose plugged into the cylinder.

Seems to work fine with this method, but the instructions need to be corrected. It would also be more flexible if the loss gauge had a higher pressure rating.

Low pressure is better for testing

Look as a rebuilder, I use this HF unit for field testing. When doing a leak down, low pressure is preferred over high pressure.

        As Tomson said..

Comments about U.S. General Cylinder Leak-Down Tester:

I agree with Tomson. I was a bit disappointed in the errors that this unit has. Even if you follow directions word for word, you'll probably still end up getting a misleading reading, or peg the needle.

I did what Tomson did as well. I was able to find a guage around the house and replaced the "loss" (right side guage) and replaced it with another air guage (off of an old spray paint gun). Now everything works as it should.

Harbor Freight isn't the best place for tools, as we all know that. But sometimes the things they have just need a little "modification" and it works just as good as higher brand products.

        A major Flaw but fixable

        By Tomson

        from Undisclosed

Comments about U.S. General Cylinder Leak-Down Tester:

The percentage guage is not reliable and as John said, it only alllows a test up to 15 PSI. At 15 PSI a variation of one or two PSI makes a huge difference in the reading. You really want to be able to do a test at higher pressures. Here's what I did: I took the % guage off and replaced it with a simple pressure guage of the type used for a water pump. It has a scale from 0-100 PSI. Now when I hook up to the compressor, I'm able to verify that both guages read the same. Then when I hook up to the cylinder, I can run the pressure right up to 50 or 100 and get an accurate reading. If the left guage reads 100 and the right guage reads 92, then I've got an 8% loss. Works very nicely. The original % guage is just a gimmick for people who can't do percentages, and I got some really wacky readings from it once I'd pegged it a time or two, which is very easy to do.

Harbor Freight should be ashamed for not fixing the instructions.

        Ok for lawnmower engines maybe

        By Les Lane

        from Undisclosed

Comments about U.S. General Cylinder Leak-Down Tester:

With the instructions having step 6 & 7 reversed, it doesn't work. When you reverse steps 6 & 7 and use it in that manner, it will give you a leakdown percentage at 10-15psi. Not good enough for an automotive engine. This tool is a waste of time and money if you are using it on anything that pumps 80psi or more of compression.

Works as designed, just don't follow the instructions as printed.

Comments about U.S. General Cylinder Leak-Down Tester:

Do like this; Install the plug adapter to the cylinder to be tested. Set air regulator fully CCW. Connect the tester to a source of compressed air. Do not connect the tester to the plug adapter yet. Turn the air regulator CW until the RH (leakage) gauge reads 0%. (Just ignore the reading on the pressure gauge) Connect the tester to the plug adapter already installed in the cylinder. Read the leakage in %. repeat for the remaining cylinders.
