I suggest removing the head and cleaning out the factory grease then putting in better quality grease. It will quiet the motor and run a lot cooler.

We run a small welding shop. It's a good tool to use when you don't want to destroy your good grinders. Therefore it fills a niche. These "heavy duty" grinders tend to overheat rapidly and the switches go bad quite often. I have replaced the factory switches with heavy duty inline switches. This makes a good disposable grinder for small projects I've been through 4 now.

Comments about Chicago Electric Power Tools Heavy Duty 4-1/2" Angle Grinder:

I have been using a couple of these grinders for welding purposes. Cutting wheel, flap wheel and such. They have done fine, but the other day, one died. This is why I bought two. So a few days later, I remembered the motor brushes they include with it. Sure enough, one was 75% worn. I replaced that one, cleaned off the other, and it works fine. I have only had these two for probably 2 months. Total hours on that one grinder is around 2 hours. Not long. So it will be interesting to see how long they last. Oh, that 2 hours was hard grinding and cutting, but still a short time to burn up a brush. A place to get spare parts would be nice.

Comments about Chicago Electric Power Tools Heavy Duty 4-1/2" Angle Grinder:

I used this to remove a muffler. The bolts were seized solid so I had to cut the bolt heads off. Then the nuts too. It has enough power for cutting in most cases but when grinding it sometimes starts to bog down. It is noisy and the switch could be improved, but it did the job.

Note that if you are using thin wheels, you should flip over the wheel arbor to the other side and vise versa.

I have used it to grind, cut and wire wheel and it did not disappoint.
It's powerfull enough to get the job done but not too powerfull that it feels like it will get away from you.

I used to profile and polish granite and marble edges with this grinder. When my 'Name Brand' grinder was stolen, I bought the HF and like the design better. I finally wore out the bushings after several years of heavy use and bought another. You can get 3 for the price of the name brands.

Compared to "name brands" this grinder performs as well as any other I own. I own two and find the convenience of not having to change disks terrific. The first I use with sanding flap disks and the second I plan to use with a wire brush. Great for preparing steel for welds and cleaning up slag.

I bought this tool about 2 years ago to sample the brand. It worked great for small jobs around the house, so I decided to try it on a railroad rail. The tool cut through a 100+ lb railroad rail with no problem and did it using only 2 cut off discs from HF. I'm totally impressed with it and even if it dies today, I got my monies worth.
