Read the reviews and now have 3 of these for camping packs. You cannot beat Harbor Freights price on these. Really good value. Way to go Harbor Freight.

Works and works well. Benefits from replacing the striker with a piece of a hacksaw blade. If something can be burned, this product can set that something on fire. Long-lasting and reliable, this product is as good as the more expensive brands in every way.

Bought a more expensive one from another brand, this is the same thing. Actually seems easier to spark. Burns bright and hot.

I'm an avid outdoorsman. I've spent months at a time in the woods. These little fire starters are superb and I have just picked up a few more to give my boys as stocking stuffers. They're more reliable then matches, lighters or in some cases flint, steel adn carbon cloth. The magnesium burns hot enough that you can get a fire started in pretty high winds with high exposure.

I ordered two of these in my first order - guess I have to see for myself that they are up to the job. They work great - started my fireplace several times now with one - really gets a good starter flame for your paper. I now have five of these - in my packs and day excursion equipment. Highly recommended.

Bought one to put in a 72-hour emergency kit, tried it out on the garage floor, sure enough, the magnesium shavings will burn easy and hot. Didn't light a fire with it but could feel the heat from the small shavings burning a couple of inches away on my hand. May get a couple more.

I've started many fires with these. They have always worked for me. It is easy to shave the bar and strike a spark with the included blade.

I aknowledge the black coating on the striker bar has to be scraped off before using but I suspect it is intentionally applied to allow safe shipping of the magnesium. I have several magnesium fire starters from different manufacturers and this one compares fa favorably at a fraction of the price. Occasionally you can buy these from Harbor freight at half price! Great little insurance for outdoorsmen, survival.

                  Comments about Magnesium Fire Starter:

I just got one of these, and at first I was frustrated like the previous user. The trick is to scrape off the fairly thick black coating on the bar. After I got it to a shiny surface, it worked just fine. That problem aside, it works for me. It does work better with a knife blade or piece of hacksaw blade than with the scraper it comes with (too thin), but still I would buy this again. Only thing stopping it from getting 5 stars is that the bar is glued on in a way that makes me less than fully confident about it staying attached for the life of the block.
